Message But we aren't talking about dynamic compression when done on the starter are we?

I understand when the motor is running, it is only going to make about half of what it will when cranking on the starter. It should make about 45 to 50 psi on the first revolution of the motor, and about 35 to 40 psi for each additional revolution until you achieve max.

I recently when through some low compression issues on my rebuild (apparently the ring's never seated). In talking to several different people who work on these engines, as well as the guy who did the machine work, they all said that you should see no less than 100psi on a starter only compression test if you expect to see combustion enough to make the motor run.

So what I was referring to is what one should see on a warm motor when turning the motor over with the starter doing a compression test.

As far as the balance tube being off being adequate, I have always been told that the throttle MUST be propped open to get an accurate test. The difference of volume between the much smaller holes in the plenum and what the throttle bodies will allow the motor to draw seems like it would be pretty significant.
